Alexa Patricia Kavistan Castro
Public Accounting Scholarship annual cost: $1790 |
Alexa lives in the city of San Juan del Sur with a grandmother whom she calls Mom. She has a 6-year-old brother, but he lives with their mother. She does not have a close relationship with her biological parents. Her grandmother is the only person who supports her with her pension she gets from the years she worked as a teacher.
Alexa graduated from high school in 2019, her favorite classes were chemistry, geography, physics, and math. Currently Alexa is studying the second year of public accounting and finance at the Polytechnic University of Nicaragua (UPOLI) in Rivas. She likes classes on business, administration, and the economy, in particular financial accounting, entrepreneurship, and technical writing classes.
She has had many difficulties with the payment of the monthly tuition, so much so that she owes the university two months of tuition. Her only support is her grandmother and recently she became ill and the medical expenses were many; that's one of the reasons Alexa got behind on college payments. Seeing this difficult situation, Alexa decided to start selling sandals in April 2021, but she could not continue with this business, because she had to take care of her grandmother who she had become ill. Her plan for the year 2022 is to continue studying, but move to the Saturday mode so she can work during the week and in this way pay for university expenses.
In high school Alexa was a monitor at a primary school, teaching math classes. She also helped children with uniforms and school supplies. She participated in a toy drive for children from low-income homes in her community. Currently at the university, she participates in a social program collecting food and delivering it to low-income people in the peripheral neighborhoods of Rivas.
Alexa is characterized as a respectful, kind, tolerant, and patient person. She says she understands that there are always people in worse situations than her, and that there is always room to help others, especially when it comes to children and the elderly. She has had a difficult life, away from her biological parents, that has formed her as a strong woman. She even survived school bullying.
She is not very sociable but still manages to achieve academic excellence. That is why she sees her life as an example of self-improvement and wants to inspire others to achieve their dreams even in the midst of difficulty.
