Pelican Eyes Hotel and Resort was founded as a profit center to financially support the Fundación A. Jean Brugger by covering 100% of the administrative costs. That way, every dollar raised by the Foundation could be dedicated to programs without taking out a percentage to cover overhead such as salaries, office supplies, and transportation. The hotel also became the largest local employer in San Juan del Sur, thus fulfilling another social mission of providing jobs for the local community.

In 2009, due to the global recession and resulting severe drop in business for the hotel, the partnership between Pelican Eyes and Fundación A. Jean Brugger was forced to be restructured. The hotel held on as long as possible, but ultimately could not continue to support 100% of the administrative overhead of the Foundation. While the hotel continues to support the Foundation with office space, Fundación A. Jean Brugger now relies on outside donations for the majority of its administrative costs. The Foundation is eternally grateful for all of the past, present, and future support from Pelican Eyes Hotel and Resort.

The partnership between Pelican Eyes Hotel and Fundación A. Jean Brugger still remains strong, based on the mutual belief that community service and local impact are the keys to sustainable development in Nicaragua.
