School Uniform Program

The Uniform Program was the inaugurate project of Fundación A. Jean Brugger – it began in 1999 with a donation that covered the costs of 292 school packets for six of the poorer schools in the communities surrounding San Juan del Sur, over the course of two years. By 2005, Fundación A. Jean Brugger had been able to provide 1,776 uniforms to children of few resources, and presently that number has reached in excess of 3000 school packets!

Each school packet consisted of black shoes, navy pants and/or a skirt, and a white shirt. Backpacks and rubber boots have now been added to the packet, and, when finances permit, notebooks and pens and pencils as well.

The uniforms are made in a sewing shop by the women’s group Mujeres Bahía Gaspar García Laviana, a community partner of Fundación A. Jean Brugger (you can read more about Mujeres Bahía on our Community Partners page). Plans are being made to open up our own uniform shop, while continuing to have these women sew the clothing. Please see our Uniform Shop page for more information.

Materials for the uniforms, seamstress’ salaries, transportation to drop off the school packets, and the purchase of shoes and backpacks are all provided through donations from Nicaraguans and foreigners alike, with the common interest of helping those stricken by poverty in this country.

It only takes USD $40 to supply a school packet for a local student. If you are interested in supporting our Uniform Project, please send us an email at info@fundacionajbrugger.org.
