Students from the San Juan del Sur Day School visit Fundación A. Jean Brugger

On May 16, nine students from the San Juan del Sur Day School, accompanied by their teacher Adam Daniel, came to the Fundación offices. The Day School students are studying how people organize themselves into groups to do service projects or to govern themselves, and they were interested to learn how the Fundación was organized.
Program Director Álvaro Novoa explained the origins and programs of the Fundación, including the requirement by scholarship students to perform community service. The scholarship students organize their own projects every year. To better explain to the young people how the organization of the projects happens, Álvaro invited two scholarship students who have been leaders in their respective groups to speak to the young people.
Francis Aliana Quiroz, who is just about to graduate with a degree in public accounting, and Daniel Monestel Yubank, who is in his fourth year of law, talked about how the different groups they have participated in began their work by investigating the problems that existed in their communities, and asking the residents what problems they thought needed to be solved. This information then guided their project.
The Day School students are planning on developing a program of their own, and they were happy for this advice on how to organize their project.

This past Sunday, April 15, Fundación A. Jean Brugger scholarship students received the second training on the crime of human trafficking provided by officials of the Institute of Strategic Study and Public Policy (IEEPP). IEEPP is partnering with the Fundación to raise awareness of this crime against the most vulnerable people in the municipality of San Juan del Sur.
The objective of this activity with our scholarship students was to provide information and necessary tools in order that the students are able to educate people about this problem in the different communities where they do community service projects.
This second training was with a more participatory, experiential and practical methodology. A report was presented on the problems in the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua highlighting actual cases. The students were divided into three groups, each of which was presented with a different case history of human trafficking.
The students were required to work through a questionaire to help them analyze, reflect and propose measures of action. With this second training the scholarship students are prepared to begin implementing this knowledge in their social initiatives with children, adolescents and parents of families.
